Ozonated Glycerin for Skin and Beauty Protocol

Mixing strengths, how often to use ozonated glycerin on the skin, and how to start gently.

Quick answer: For skin, ozonated glycerin is used at 2.5% to 10%, mixed into lotion or other products, or at full strength. Test a small spot first before using it undiluted. Use it 2–3 times a day.

What are the basics of ozonated glycerin on the skin?

  • Ozonated glycerin is water-soluble and has no ozone smell. It is light and non-greasy, so it mixes into lotion or moisturizer and layers well in a skin routine.
  • Diluted: 2.5% to 10% is the general guidance. Dilute it for comfort, or to mix it into your lotion, moisturizer or other products.
  • Undiluted: full-strength ozonated glycerin can also go on the skin. Test a small spot first before using it undiluted, then dab it on 2 to 3 times a day.
  • Scalp: put a small amount in your palm and massage it in.
  • Try a small patch of skin first. The amounts assume glycerin at about 10,000 ppm (parts per million, a strength label on the bottle).
  • Cosmetic use only. This sheet does not claim that ozonated glycerin treats any skin condition.

2.5% to 10% is the general guidance for skin. Dilute it for comfort or to mix it into other products. Full-strength ozonated glycerin can also go on the skin once you have tested a small spot.

What are the best tips when using ozonated glycerin on the skin?

  • Try a small patch of skin first (the inside of your wrist), and wait 24 hours before using it more widely.
  • Mix fresh. Keep leftovers in the fridge and use them within 24 hours.
  • Glycerin is slightly thick. A small amount is enough, and it absorbs quickly on slightly damp skin.
  • It layers cleanly under moisturizer. Use sunscreen in the morning as you normally would.
  • Store the bottle of undiluted ozonated glycerin away from heat and light. If you will not finish it within a few weeks, keep it in the fridge. Mixed batches keep in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

Is ozonated glycerin safe on skin? Side effects and precautions

  • If your skin turns red or irritated, mix it weaker or use it less often. Ozonated glycerin is slightly acidic, and broken skin may sting.
  • Be careful if you are sensitive to glycolic acid, which is higher in ozonated glycerin. Start diluted and patch test.
  • Keep it out of the eyes. Eye use should be guided by a qualified practitioner.
  • Choose a product from a maker that tests every batch. Strength varies between batches and between makers.
  • Never breathe ozone gas.
  • Do not use ozonated glycerin during pregnancy. Check with your healthcare provider before starting, especially if you have a heart or bleeding condition or take blood thinners.

What to look for in a product: made with pure oxygen (not room air or a concentrator), lab-grade glycerin, a stated and tested concentration, and made fresh. The amounts on this sheet assume glycerin at about 10,000 ppm.

More detail

What the studies used

Study doses are listed as printed in each paper. They are not the amounts on this sheet.

  • In 48 Japanese women, ozonized glycerin cosmetics at 80 and 800 ppm, applied twice daily to facial age spots for 8 weeks, lowered the melanin index (a skin-darkness score) by 16.7 and 15.2 units, more than the matching control products. No treatment-related adverse events were reported. The authors work for a maker of ozonized glycerin (Hanada 2022). For scale, a 10% mix of glycerin at about 10,000 ppm works out to roughly 1,000 ppm. The two ppm figures may not be measured the same way, so treat this only as a rough comparison.
  • Studies of ozonated oil on skin are in wounds and foot problems, not beauty outcomes. In 300 adults with athlete's foot, ozonated oil twice daily for 6 weeks worked about as well as 2% ketoconazole or 1% terbinafine (Travieso 2025).

Only 3 human studies of ozonated glycerin exist (one skin trial and two single-patient dental reports), and none was nebulized, swallowed, nasal or a mouthwash, so the studies below are on ozonated oils unless noted.
