Ozonated Glycerin Mouthwash and Gum Protocol
How to mix ozonated glycerin into a mouthwash, how long to swish, and how to use a small amount on the gums.
Quick answer: For a mouthwash, mix ozonated glycerin to 10% in water, swish for 1–2 minutes, then spit, 1–2 times a day. For the gums, a pea-sized amount at full strength is used before bed.
Home method. Best done as recommended by a licensed provider who knows your health history.
What are the basics of ozonated glycerin mouthwash?
- Ozonated glycerin is water-soluble, so it rinses clean without the oily film of ozonated oil.
- Mouthwash: mix it at 10% in water, swish for 1 to 2 minutes and spit. A drop of peppermint oil is optional.
- Gums: massage a pea-sized amount of full-strength glycerin into the gum line before bed.
- Use the mouthwash 1 to 2 times a day.
- The amounts assume glycerin at about 10,000 ppm (parts per million, a strength label on the bottle).

How do you use ozonated glycerin as a mouthwash?
| Use | Mix | How to use it | How often |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mouthwash | 10% in water: 1 teaspoon ozonated glycerin added to 3 tablespoons of water | Swish 1–2 minutes and spit | 1–2 times a day |

What are the best tips when using ozonated glycerin mouthwash?
- Rinse, then spit. Do not swallow the mouthwash.
- Add a drop of peppermint oil to the mouthwash if you like the taste.
- Mix the mouthwash fresh. Keep leftovers in the fridge and use them within 24 hours.
- Store the bottle of undiluted ozonated glycerin away from heat and light. If you will not finish it within a few weeks, keep it in the fridge. Mixed batches keep in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
Is ozonated glycerin mouthwash safe? Side effects and precautions
- Ozonated glycerin is slightly acidic. Strong mixes can irritate the lining of the mouth. If it stings, dilute the mouthwash further or use less.
- Use only a pea-sized amount at full strength on the gums.
- This is not a replacement for dental care. See your dentist for gum or tooth problems.
- Never breathe ozone gas.
- Do not use ozonated glycerin during pregnancy. Check with your healthcare provider before starting, especially if you have a heart or bleeding condition or take blood thinners.
What to look for in a product: made with pure oxygen (not room air or a concentrator), lab-grade glycerin, a stated and tested concentration, and made fresh. The amounts on this sheet assume glycerin at about 10,000 ppm.

- A clean cup and a measuring spoon. Nothing else is needed.
What the studies used
Study doses are listed as printed in each paper. They are not the amounts on this sheet.
- The studies of ozone in the mouth used ozonated olive oil. In 96 adults with gum disease, a 30-second rinse with 12 mL of ozonated olive oil mouthwash three times a day for 3 months lowered salivary MMP-8 (a gum inflammation marker) more than cleaning alone. Allocation was by birth date and there was no placebo (Nardi 2020).
- In 63 adults with early gum disease after cleaning, ozonated olive oil toothpaste plus mouthwash twice daily for 30 days lowered plaque by 33% and placebo by 24%, which was not a significant difference. Pocket depth fell more with the ozonated oil (0.4 vs 0.1 mm) (Abbinante 2026).
- In 30 people with recurring mouth ulcers, 2 drops of ozonated oil 4 times a day for 5 days brought pain down to 1.5 on a 10-point scale, against 1.8 with plain sesame oil and 4.6 with a water placebo (Dharmavaram 2015).
Only 3 human studies of ozonated glycerin exist (one skin trial and two single-patient dental reports), and none was nebulized, swallowed, nasal or a mouthwash, so the studies below are on ozonated oils unless noted. No trial has tested an ozonated glycerin mouthwash.
