Ozone Ear Insufflation Protocol
Dosing, equipment, helpful hints and precautions for ozone ear insufflation.
Quick answer: Ozone ear insufflation puts ozone gas into the ear. The sheet uses 38–70 µg/mL for 2–6 minutes, 2–7 times a week, at a flow of 1/8 LPM.
Home method. Best done as recommended by a licensed provider who knows your health history.
What are the basics of ozone ear insufflation?
- Concentrations generally range from 38–70 µg/mL (MediSkill clinic guide). Start at the low end. None of the ear studies on this page used more than 10 µg/mL.
- No more than 7x per week.
- Madrid says to check that the eardrum is intact before every session, because gas should not be put into an ear with a perforated drum.
- If there is itching, dryness, discomfort, or discharge, stop until it subsides and restart at half the time, strength and frequency.
Accessories required: stethoscope or headset; water bubbler.
What dose and schedule are used for ozone ear insufflation?
| Frequency | Amount | Flow rate | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2–7x per week | 2–6 minutes | 1/8 liter per minute (LPM) | 38–70 µg/mL |
Start extremely slowly with these applications. It is a powerful modality. If you know you are sensitive, cut the starting points in half and slowly work your way up.
What are the best tips when using ozone ear insufflation?
- Some people are more sensitive to the gas, so a fan nearby is a good idea.
- Most will smell some gas. Use a well-ventilated area or a fan across the face. Some smell is typical.
- Don't press the stethoscope into the ear canals; it could cause pressure buildup and ear damage.
- If you smell excessive gas, make sure the ear cups are sitting securely in the ear canal.
- Ozone dries the ear canal. Moisten the ear canal before treating. The water bubbler also moistens the gas.
What are the precautions for ozone ear insufflation, and who should avoid it?
- Never breathe ozone gas. It irritates the lungs. Do the session in a well-ventilated room with a fan moving gas away from your face. If you cough or your eyes water, stop and move to fresh air.
- A flare-up of symptoms may be a "Herx" (a short Herxheimer reaction, a flare-up of symptoms) or may just mean the dose is too much. If symptoms flare, stop and speak with your practitioner.
- For a suspected Herx: stop for 4–7 days, restart at half the strength and time, then work back up if tolerated, as the practitioner directs.
- "Weepy" or consistently moist ears usually mean too much gas. Take a break, then resume at lower strength, time and frequency under physician guidance.
- Do not use the ear route if the eardrum is perforated or you cannot confirm it is intact (Madrid, section 9).
- Headaches after a session: lower the strength and time by half next time.
- Some continuing escape of gas from the ear cups is desirable; you want the gas to flow, not be trapped.
- A Herx can show up as excessive fatigue, rash, lymph drainage, and/or fever or chills.
Contraindications
Talk to your provider first. They will evaluate uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, G6PD deficiency, bleeding disorders and pregnancy.
More detail
Equipment
All parts must be ozone resistant to avoid contaminants in the gas (316 stainless steel, titanium, silicone and quartz glass are acceptable).
- Medical oxygen tank and regulator (not an oxygen concentrator)
- Ozone generator
- Water bubbling device
- Ozone headset or stethoscope
- Fan and/or a carbon-filter mask to avoid breathing the gas
What the studies used
Study settings are listed as printed in each paper. They are not this sheet's dosing.
- In one man with sudden hearing loss that did not respond to steroid injections into the ear, 10 ear-canal sessions of 10 µg/mL for 20 minutes each were followed by better hearing (about 70 to 91 dB before, 43 to 46 dB after). It is a single case with no comparison (Ozcan 2026).
- In 52 people with a long-lasting ear infection and a perforated eardrum, an ear specialist irrigated the middle ear with 0.6 µg/mL ozone-oxygen gas in 5 to 7 procedures; discharge and inflammation stopped in 81%, against 18 people who had standard care only. This is a clinic procedure, not the home method on this page (Shakov 1999).
- In 47 children with multiple disabilities, ear insufflation of 10 µg in 120 mL for 5 to 10 minutes was one part of a larger ozone program, so its own effect is not known (2018 abstract).
No randomized trial of ear insufflation in people was found. The randomized hearing-loss and tinnitus trials used whole-body ozone, not the ear route (Shreef 2009).
