Ozone Oil Pulling Protocol
Amount, swish time, how often and precautions for swishing ozonated oil in the mouth.
Quick answer: Oil pulling with ozonated oil means swishing 1 tablespoon in the mouth for 5–20 minutes. The sheet uses it about 3 times a week, with a maximum of 2 times a day. It is a home protocol.
Home method. Best done as recommended by a licensed provider who knows your health history.
What are the basics of ozone oil pulling?
- Oil pulling means swishing a spoonful of oil around your mouth, then spitting it out. Ozone oil pulling uses oil that has been treated with ozone. It is a swish and spit, never a swallow.
- Start with 5 to 10 minutes and work up toward 20. Most people do it about three times a week for everyday care. For a specific mouth concern, some people go up to twice a day.
- Madrid gives no strength or schedule for oil pulling. It calls mouthwashes made with ozonated oil a complementary therapy, says the maker sets the oil's strength, and advises buying oils with a documented peroxide value (PV, a lab number that shows how much ozone the oil holds).
- Oil pulling adds to brushing, flossing and dental visits. It does not replace them.

What dose and schedule are used for ozone oil pulling?
| Goal | Amount | Swish time | How often |
|---|---|---|---|
| Getting started | 1 tablespoon (about 15 mL) | 5–10 minutes | About 3x per week |
| Everyday care | 1 tablespoon | Up to 20 minutes | About 3x per week |
| A specific mouth concern | 1 tablespoon | Up to 20 minutes | Up to 2x per day |
For comparison, the one oil pulling trial had children swish 10 mL for 10 minutes on weekdays for 15 days. Start low and build up if your mouth is sensitive.
What are the best tips when using ozone oil pulling?
- Do it after brushing, then follow with warm water rinses and brush again if you like.
- Move the oil gently around all parts of the mouth. It turns creamy white and grows in volume as it mixes with saliva.
- Spit it into a trash can, not the sink, so the oil does not clog the drain.
- Use an oil made for oral use, from a maker that states the peroxide value. Olive oil is the most studied base.
What are the precautions for ozone oil pulling, and who should avoid it?
- Do not swallow the oil.
- Stop if you get burning, soreness or ulcers in the mouth. Use it less often or at a lower strength, or stop.
- After a tooth extraction or other mouth surgery, ask your dentist first. Madrid says oil can disturb a clot in a healing socket and reserves it for dry socket.
- This method uses oil only. Never breathe ozone gas.
- Pregnancy: check with your healthcare provider before starting.

What the studies used
Evidence is thin: only one randomized trial tested true oil pulling with ozonated oil, a small pilot in children. Studies used different amounts and none compared pulling times.
- In 75 schoolchildren aged 12 to 14, 15 days of pulling with freshly ozonated sesame oil (10 mL for 10 minutes, weekdays), plain sesame oil, or a chlorhexidine rinse (a standard antiseptic mouthwash) all lowered plaque, debris, calculus and mouth bacteria counts. Ozonated oil did not beat plain oil on most measures. Its plaque score was lower than plain oil at 15 days (Vadhana 2019).
- In 96 adults with gum disease, a rinse with ozonated olive oil (12 mL for 30 seconds, 3 times a day for 3 months) plus professional cleaning lowered a gum-inflammation marker in saliva (MMP-8) more than cleaning alone (p<0.001). There was no placebo, and this was a rinse, not pulling (Nardi 2020).
- In 20 adults with gum inflammation, massaging 1 mL of ozonated oil into the gums for 10 minutes, 3 times a day for 3 weeks, did about as well as chlorhexidine gel (Indurkar 2016).
