Ozone Sauna Protocol
Concentration, session length, temperature and safety for the ozone sauna, a steam chamber or bag that exposes the skin to ozone while the head stays outside.
Quick answer: An ozone sauna is a steam chamber or bag that exposes the skin to ozone while the head stays outside. The sheet uses 5–10 µg/mL (10 is the maximum) for 20–30 minutes, up to 2–3 times a week. It is a practitioner protocol.
Home method. Best done as recommended by a licensed provider who knows your health history.

There are many ways ozone sauna sessions are done. This sheet follows the Madrid Declaration's method.
What are the basics of the ozone sauna?
- An ozone sauna combines steam (warm water vapor) with a low concentration of ozone-oxygen gas. The ozone acts on the skin. Your head stays outside the chamber, and you never breathe the gas.
- Madrid gives the ozone concentration as 5 µg/mL for a sauna cabin and 5 to 10 µg/mL for a bag that covers nearly the whole body. Table 1B lists low, medium and high as 5, 8 and 10 µg/mL.
- In a cabin, Madrid describes 10 to 15 minutes with ozone, then 10 to 15 minutes of steam alone, at 40 to 45 °C. In a body bag, the exposure is 20 minutes.
- Madrid calls the ozone sauna a reasonable alternative for people with poor IV access. It says the local form can also give systemic effects, and that clinical trials are still needed to confirm its usefulness.
- Flow: Madrid gives no gas flow rate. The published studies used inlet gas at 1 L/min for 20 minutes (Bocci 1999; Borrelli 2023, healthy volunteers) and 500 mL/min for 30 minutes (Dias 2023). Follow your device's instructions.
- Frequency: Madrid gives none. Our ozone sauna article describes up to 2 to 3 sessions a week, 20 to 30 minutes each, with benefit building over at least 6 to 10 sessions.

What dose and schedule are used for the ozone sauna?
| Setup | Ozone concentration | With ozone | Then | Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sauna cabin, Table 1B levels | 5 (low), 8 (medium), 10 (high) µg/mL | 10–15 min | 10–15 min steam only | 40–45 °C |
| Sauna cabin, Madrid section 13.3 | 5 µg/mL | 10 min | 10 min steam only | 40–42 °C |
| Bag for near-total body exposure | 5–10 µg/mL | 20 min | None | None stated |
Start at the low end and raise only if it is tolerated. Madrid's base rule is to titrate from low doses.
What are the best tips when using the ozone sauna?
- A helper makes sessions easier: they close the chamber and seal around your neck with ozone-resistant pads or wet towels.
- Come well hydrated and keep sipping water or electrolytes. Skip high-dose antioxidants such as vitamin C or N-acetylcysteine for 4 to 6 hours beforehand, since they can blunt the ozone reaction (from our ozone sauna article).
- Wear a carbon-filter mask. Madrid recommends one for open applications such as bags.
- Use the room with good ventilation anyway. Small leaks happen.
What are the precautions for the ozone sauna, and who should avoid it?
- Never breathe the gas. Keep the head outside the chamber. Do not rig an ozone line to a regular steam or infrared sauna.
- Use a sealed chamber with an ozone destruct unit that clears leftover ozone before the chamber opens.
- Make every part that touches ozone from ozone-resistant material, such as silicone, glass or stainless steel.
- If a skin rash, itching or pimples appear, shorten or space out the sessions. If severe, stop until they settle and restart with a shorter session.
Contraindications
Talk to your provider first. They will evaluate uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, G6PD deficiency, bleeding disorders and pregnancy.
More detail
Equipment
- A sealed chamber or body bag that keeps the gas around the body and the head outside
- Built-in steam for steady heat and humidity
- A medical-grade ozone generator fed with oxygen from a tank or an oxygen concentrator. A concentrator is fine for an ozone sauna. Do not feed it room air.
- Ozone destruct unit and a carbon-filter mask
What the studies used
No clinical trial of the sauna alone exists in our study set. The best data are from healthy volunteers. Study settings are listed as printed and are not Madrid dosing.
- In 6 healthy volunteers, a 20-minute ozone sauna session (inlet gas about 3% ozone at 1 L/min, cabin ozone at most about 0.9 µg/mL) raised oxidative-stress and inflammation markers briefly. They were back to baseline at 24 hours, with no adverse events (Bocci 1999).
- A second study in 15 healthy people with the same set-up found the same pattern (Borrelli 2023).
- In 40 people with chronic low back pain, adding twice-weekly sauna sessions (12 in all) to ozone injections gave a similar result to injections alone (90% vs 85% with pain below 60%, no test reported) (Tanbouli 2019).
