Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis Ozone Protocol

Topical ozone for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis: ozonated oil and ozone water showers and rinses, with a short note on the IV ozone Madrid adds for more severe cases.

Quick answer: At home, topical ozone for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis means ozonated oil on the skin and ozone water showers or rinses. The studies used oil twice a day and water showers 3 to 5 times a week. For more severe cases Madrid adds IV ozone given by a practitioner; see the IV ozone protocol. Test a small area of skin first.

What are the basics of ozone for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis?

  • Madrid says psoriasis follows generally the same protocol as atopic dermatitis, so they share one sheet here.
  • For milder skin concerns Madrid describes topical ozone: water-based sprays, lotions, creams and oils. It gives no strength or schedule for creams, so follow the maker's directions.
  • For moderate to severe atopic dermatitis, or mild cases that did not respond to other care, Madrid indicates an IV ozone series given by a practitioner. This sheet shows only its schedule; see the IV ozone protocol for the method and contraindications.
  • For psoriasis of the scalp, see the home scalp steps on the fungal skin and nails sheet.

What are the best tips when using ozone for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis?

  • Start gently and build up. Madrid's general rule is first do no harm.
  • Skin care between sessions: a thin layer of ozonated oil, or an ozone water rinse, as on the topical oil and infused water sheets.

What are the precautions for ozone for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis?

  • Patch test first: try a small area of skin before wider use.
  • Stop if you get irritation, redness or burning.
  • Keep oil away from the eyes.
  • Do not use on deep or infected wounds without a practitioner.
  • Pregnancy: check with your healthcare provider before starting.
  • If your practitioner adds IV ozone, its contraindications are on the IV protocol.

What the studies used

Study doses are listed as printed in each paper and are not Madrid dosing.

  • In 65 children aged 8 months to 3 years with extensive atopic dermatitis, adding ozonated olive oil on the lesions twice a day for 15 days, along with rectal ozone, to usual care shortened time to remission from 25.1 to 19.6 days (p<0.001) and lengthened remission from 4.3 to 14.5 months. Groups were not randomized (Illek 2014).
  • In 60 children with infantile atopic dermatitis, a shower in ozonated water 3 to 5 times a week plus ozonated oil twice a day for 2 weeks gave an effective rate of 89.6% vs 30.7% with warm water and base oil (p<0.001). Only the abstract is on file, so strengths are not known (Central South Univ Med Sci 2018).
  • In 40 adults with stable psoriasis vulgaris, ozonated oil twice a day on one side worked about as well as a steroid ointment on the other by 2 weeks (69.8% vs 70.3% effective), though the steroid was faster at 1 week. Non-randomized, abstract only (Central South Univ Med Sci 2018).

There is no placebo-controlled trial. The evidence is small, uncontrolled or non-randomized.
